What Is Dry Needling?

A common misconception is that dry needling is the same as acupuncture. While they both provide relief from pain, the practices are very different. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese practice focusing on the flow of energy known as 'Qi' throughout the body to treat disease. Dry needling is a Western approach to treating pain and dysfunction in musculoskeletal conditions and can be used to treat cases of chronic and acute pain without the use of medications and surgical procedures.

Dry needling is a technique where fine, short, stainless steel, acupuncture style needles are placed into the skin to ease muscular pain and tightness; it is designed to stimulate trigger points or reduce irritable, stubborn muscles.

Dry needling can be used to treat a variety of conditions including:
  • chronic pain
  • whiplash
  • lumbar pain
  • neck pain
  • shoulder pain
  • headaches and migraines

What To Expect With Dry Needling

Generally, most people do not experience the needle entering the skin. However, the local twitch response or sudden slight contraction of the muscle may provoke a very brief response. This can be described as a light cramping sensation, and patients commonly experience heaviness in the limbs or a pleasant feeling of relaxation.

Each patient’s response to the treatment is different with some patients reporting pain relief after just one treatment while others find comfort after several sessions.

Each needle is sterile and at no time do we ever inject anything into your body. We have qualified and experienced physiotherapists who will administer the dry needling in conjunction with your physio treatment.
