Sports Physiotherapy

Our Sport Injury Treatment Process

When you visit our clinic, we will help assess your injury and work with you to develop a treatment plan to help get you back to playing or training sooner.

We offer a range of physio treatments for sports injuries including physiotherapy exercises, massage treatment, dry needling and shockwave therapy. We also stock a wide variety of braces, tapes and self massage tools to assist in the recovery process.

What Are The Causes Of Sports Injuries?

Sports injuries are most commonly caused by overuse, direct impact or force that is greater than the body is able to manage. Chronic sports injuries are caused by repeated overuse of particular areas, which is most frequently a result of technique or training issues. Working out the cause can be quite complex, but we are here to help.

In contrast, acute sports injuries are those that are caused by sudden, significant force like sprained ankles, concussions, hamstring strains and severe knee joint injuries. Early diagnosis and management of these can help you return to sport sooner and more safely.

What Should I Do After A Sports Injury?

If you suffer from a sports injury, you should see a medical professional as soon as possible. The required response will also depend on the type of injury you’ve suffered. For sprains, strains and joint injuries, it is recommended to keep the area moving (without aggravating pain), elevate and compress to relieve swelling and see a health professional ASAP.

If you’ve suffered a sports injury and pain persists, see your doctor, or get in touch with us at Edgeworth Physiotherapy. We can help assess the severity of the injury, as well as help rehabilitate and strengthen the injured site.

How Can I Prevent Sports Injuries?

There are a number of preventative measures you can take to avoid painful sports injuries. These include:

  • Warm up your body before playing sport, including something to help elevate your heart rate, range of motion exercises to prepare your joints and soft tissues, and sports specific skill work to improve coordination
  • Wear appropriate equipment including footwear and any necessary protective gear
  • Drink appropriate fluids before, during and after the game to stay hydrated. Do not over-exert your body too quickly
  • Allow for appropriate recovery time before playing again

Our physios treat all sporting injuries. These can be as simple as a cork (contusion), to the diagnosis and management of acute knee injuries such as ACL tears, to groin strains, to complex post-surgical rehabilitation. We can help you to meet the demands of your sport to safely return to play and help reduce the likelihood of future injuries.

Senior physiotherapist, Dani, has done special training to treat dancers, circus/aerial artists, pole dancers, gymnasts, cheer leaders and contortionists. She enjoys helping her clients work on ways to unlock flexibility, strength and movement patterns that feel impossible. She can also help hypermobile sports people to manage their bodies to safely and comfortably stay in their sport. See our dedicated dance page for more.

Our physios have experience with soccer, rugby, hockey, athletics, golf, tennis, swimming and more. The demands of each sport can be quite different, and we are well trained to tailor your rehab to your sport.
