Neck Pain

Postural problems, injury and stress are the main causes of neck pain. Diseases such as arthritis and degenerative discs can also be responsible for causing pain and loss of movement. Neck pain can be acute, for example, a wry neck, or a chronic issue.

We can help identify the reason for your neck pain with a full and comprehensive assessment and provide proven effective treatment. Treatment may include; massage, manual therapy, dry needling, exercises prescription, electrotherapy, postural advice and strapping.

Lower Back - Acute & Chronic

Lower back pain accounts for one of the most common and costly health conditions in Australia. Around 25% of Australians suffer from back pain on any day (APA, 2016). The muscles, ligaments, discs or bones in the back may be the source of the issue. Most people will not need scanning for their lower back issue. It will resolve with the correct treatment in the majority of cases.

Lower back pain may be acute or chronic. We can help you through either situation with a comprehensive assessment and provide a tailored plan that suits your needs. Treatment may include; exercise prescription, manual therapy, massage therapy, electrotherapy, traction, dry needling, strapping, stretching and advice in how to manage your back.

Headaches & Migraines

Headaches are often caused by neck tightness, either of the vertebra or surrounding musculature. This tightness may be due to physical or emotional demands placed on the neck.

We can help identify the reason for your headaches with a full and comprehensive assessment and provide proven effective treatment. Treatment may include; massage, manual therapy, dry needling, exercises prescription, postural advice and strapping.

Shoulder

Shoulder pain is a common complaint that occurs in all age groups, but tends to increase as we get older. Injury can be due to everyday usage, wear and tear, or an injury sustained to the joint. The shoulder is a very mobile joint, therefore can sustain injury to either the joint or the musculature that support it. Around 15-30% of adults have issues with their shoulder at any one time (APA, 2016). It is important to see a physiotherapist if you are unable to use the arm or to carry objects, pain while at rest or swelling or significant bruising around the joint and arm.

Our physiotherapists can assess the shoulder and provide the appropriate plan. If scanning is required, we can help with this or liaise with your GP.

Knee

The knee is an area of the body that is commonly injured, but often overlooked. Injuries can happen if you do something new, such as lifting a heavy object or starting a new sport, or due to a build up of stress over the years with repetitive movements or incorrect biomechanics. Over 1.2 million Australians suffer from knee pain. 80 % of those suffer from knee arthritis. It is the leading cause of musculoskeletal pain and disability.

We can help identify the issues with your knee pain through a comprehensive assessment and provide a treatment plan, which may include; exercise, electrotherapy, massage, manual therapy, advice, strapping, use of braces and orthotics. We also liaise with local orthopaedic specialists to help provide the best treatment following surgery.

Ankles

The ankle and foot are another commonly injured are. The ankle may be injured due to an accident (rolling of the ankle) or a repetitive, over use type injury. A sprained ankle is a common injury assessed and treated by physiotherapists. The injury ranges from mild, moderate to severe. Treatment will depend on the severity of the injury.

We also assess calf tears, achilles tendinopathies, impingements, plantar fasciitis, severs and 'shin splints' to name but a few. We are also able to provide crutches, moon boots and braces for injuries sustained to the ankle and foot.

Elbows

Elbow pain can be caused by local muscle, tendon or joint. Elbow pain can also be referred from your neck and shoulder. It is similar to sciatica. Many elbow conditions can take months, or even years to improve if treatment is delayed or the diagnosis is incorrect. It is therefore important to contact your physiotherapy early if you are experiencing elbow pain.

One of the most common causes of elbow pain maybe due to medial and lateral epicondyalgia (golfers and tennis elbow). Our physiotherapists can assess and provide treatment for these conditions, as well as a range of other conditions that affect the elbow.

Wrists

The hand and wrist are made up of an intrinsic set of muscles, tendons, bones and nerves. It can easily be injured. Wrist pain may occur due to sports trauma, a work injury or due to overuse. Examples of causes of wrist pain include; carpal tunnel syndrome, de Quervains, rheumatoid arthritis, trigger fingers and fractures. We can provide a comprehensive assessment and treatment of your hand and wrist. Physiotherapy treatment can range from exercise prescription, manual therapy, massage therapy, dry needling, electrotherapy, bracing and splint and advice on the management of your pain. We are also able to cast fractures.

Strapping and Casting

At Edgeworth Physiotherapy we offer a variety of Injury Support. Our strapping options, whether it is to support and stabilise your body throughout activities and sports or to provide assistance with movement for daily function and pain relief our friendly therapists will have you covered.

Did you know that we also create casts for fractures? While there is an additional cost involved, this can be a much faster and more pleasant experience than attending the hospital. After a fracture, a half cast is required for 7-10 days to allow for swelling. Then we can apply a waterproof cast for the remainder of the time needed. Your doctor should be consulted for what kind of cast and how long it is to remain on. We also remove casts and rehabilitate the injured limb.

Exo-splints are a relatively new alternative to a cast. They are thermoplastic (heat mouldable), light weight, comfortable and durable. The best part- they can be applied from day 1, eliminating the need to have your cast changed at the 7-10 day mark. They can also be removed by a health professional for examinations and follow-up X-rays and then put straight back on. Chat to us if you would like to know more about this great alternative.

In relation to casting we can assist with plaster casts for those breaks and fractures and also an alternative to plaster or fibreglass casts we can recommend the use of an Exosplint. These exosplints can provide the option for a waterproof, adjustable, removable brace that can a lock when in place. These are on offer for a variety of wrist and arm fractures. Please contact reception to make an appointment.
