Sports Massage Techniques

Sports massage therapists employ a number of specialised techniques, including:

1. Deep tissue massage

As the name suggests, this technique reaches deep into layers of muscles to reduce tightness.

2. Myofascial Release

  • The myofascia refers to connective tissue, which encases and is embedded in our muscles, bones and more. This technique is similar to deep tissue massage but concentrates on releasing tight myofascial regions. It may involve large, sweeping strokes or sustained pressure on areas where fascia has become bound down and a little “stuck”.

3. Trigger point therapy

  • This technique focuses on a muscle’s trigger point which is activated by overuse or injury. A trigger point may present as a muscle “knot” or may transfer pain to another area of the body. The therapist applies sustained pressure (30 to 90 seconds) on the tissue around the trigger points to relieve pain.

Is Sports Massage For Elite Athletes Only?

We’ve all seen images of professional athletes in the hands of their massage therapists, being treated before or after they take to the field, court or track, and even during a match.

You don’t have to be an elite athlete, however, to engage the services of a sports massage therapist. Anyone who undertakes any form of exercise, however mild, can benefit from sports massage therapy.

The main objective of sports massage is to reduce built-up tension in the body’s soft tissues as a result of overuse. The massage can be either quite firm or gentle, depending on your needs.

Your therapist will target tight and over worked areas, or can do a more generalised light massage to help improve blood flow or drain out swelling.

FAQ’s About Sports Therapies

  • What is the difference between a sports massage and a deep tissue massage?

A sports massage is different to a regular deep tissue message because they are more targeted to your body's needs. A sports massage will target any muscle imbalances or any areas of your body that experience recurring pain or tightness. If you experience an injury, a sports massage is more likely to target the area and encourage healing and recovery more intensely than a regular massage.

  • What is the purpose of a sports massage?

The central focuses of a sports massage therapy session are to significantly enhance and increase blood circulation, release and reduce muscle tension, and increase the elasticity of your muscle tissue. By working to prevent muscle tightness, sports massages contribute to preventing further injury and improving flexibility.

  • Do sports massages hurt?

As everyone's pain tolerance is different, some sports massages can feel more painful to some than others. It is important to remember that any pain experienced during a sports massage should not feel unbearable, it can feel uncomfortable at times but it shouldn't border on agony. If you start to feel pain during your sports massage, let your therapist know so that they can adjust their techniques to suit your needs.

  • Should I have a sports massage regularly?

For consistent results and improvement of your flexibility and circulation, it is recommended that you have sports massages regularly. People who exercise on a regular basis of three to four times a week are encouraged to have a sports massage every two weeks, or at least once a month.

  • Can I still have a sports massage even if I don't play sports?

Yes. Sports massages aren't just for those who play sports or exercise regularly as injuries can occur outside of these fields. As sports massages do more than work to heal injuries from overuse of certain areas of the body and muscles, they are not exclusive to sports-related injuries or pain.

  • What should I wear for my sports massage?

Underwear is required during a sports massage but you can also wear stretchy shorts or loose-fitting clothing if you would feel more comfortable. If you are having a sports massage that targets your legs, your quadriceps or hip flexors, it is important to avoid tight clothing, such as cycling shorts, that may restrict access to these areas.

  • What happens during a sports massage therapy session?

You will have a consultation with your sports therapist where you will discuss the goals that you want to achieve through sports massage therapy sessions You will also discuss any areas that you are experiencing pain or discomfort so that they know where to target and what approach to take. During your sports massage therapy session, your therapist will most likely use kneading, wringing and trigger pointing techniques to ease and relax your body, reduce pain and increase circulation and flexibility.
