Women's body undergo many changes throughout and after a pregnancy. At Edgeworth Physiotherapy, we are here to help make the process as easy as possible for your body. We can help strengthen and improve mobility in preparation for pregnancy, relieving aches and pains during and rehabilitate afterward!
There are several reasons you might look to a physio in relation to pregnancy. Every pregnancy and every woman is different, so your care is designed to meet your needs.
Let's look at the different stages of pregnancy:
We can help iron out any niggles that may flare up during pregnancy. Poor posture, lack of strength, back pain, hip pain and “sciatic” type pains may be aggravated by the changes our bodies go through during pregnancy. It can be a good idea to get on top of these prior or even early in pregnancy, before our bodies start to change a great deal.
Some women may develop back or pelvic pain. These changes are often due to a combination of things. Hormone changes during pregnancy increase the extensibility of our ligaments to prepare for birth. The extra movement can make things a bit tough for our muscles to control, leading to pain and muscle tightness. Of course, our bodies also change shape, with the weight of the baby, amniotic fluid, etc increasing over time. This changes our posture and how we use our core and pelvic floor.
Physio can help here by relieving pain and muscle tension that builds up in response to these changes. At Edgeworth Physiotherapy, we have a pregnancy pillow, so you can safely and comfortably lie down for any manual therapy needed. Many of our pregnancy patients wish they could take our pregnancy pillow home! During this time we also can prescribe gentle exercises to relieve muscle pain and tension (stretching), as well as light, safe strengthening to help your body adapt to the changes it is going through. We also have specific Women’s Health appointments for any pelvic floor concerns.
Some women experience different symptoms that can crop up even several months later. Physio can help in regaining core strength, pelvic floor rehabilitation, and reduce and safely control abdominal separation. Bladder leakage, difficulty getting back to higher impact tasks such as running and jumping, as well as urinary and bowel urgency should all be addressed by a specially trained physiotherapist.
Some women also experience aches and pains from carrying and feeding their new baby, including neck and shoulder pain, lower back pain and carpal tunnel syndrome. Physio can help relieve these things with manual therapy, as well as helping you to develop postural strategies and habits to help manage these tasks better.
